In addition to the original name, over twenty other names of this fish are known in Croatia, “bugva”, “boba”, “buba”, “bukvina”… and it is one of the most numerous fish in the Adriatic and Mediterranean Sea . Its body is elongated, spindle-shaped, covered with small scales, with very prominent eyes on its head. This fish got its name precisely because of its eyes, which are very large compared to the rest of the body.
The upper part of the body is grey-greenish blue in colour and the sides are grey with three to four longitudinal stripes with a silver belly. It grows up to 35 cm in length and can reach a weight of up to half a kilo.
The bogue lives in large flocks. It feeds on a variety of foods, mostly plankton, algae and small shrimps from the seabed.
